Solving soil problems is our speciality.  Making them work like never before is satisfying. Compaction is a lack of air and water pore space when soil particles nest and key into each other.  It happens frequently with finely textured soils, and the heavier the soil, the more the compaction.   Our light-weight amendments are the agronomic anti-dote to compaction, and perform long-term because our products are non- compactible pore space.  Both AXIS and Play Ball! are 82% porous and address the issues directly.  Soggy, wet, saturated soils are messy.  Often the cause is underlying soil layers, tight clay soils, poor drainage and poor grading.  To address layering issues you often need specialty deep tine aeration equipment. Using AXIS  or Play Ball! guarantees that your investment to create drainage channels thru layers will remain open and permeable.  To improve drainage, increasing porosity with porous amendments allows water to move through the soil. To reduce puddling you have to increase drainage and porosity and our products do both. Poor Infiltration is a symptom of compaction, poor drainage and low permeability.  Applying AXIS and Play Ball!  reduces compaction and increases soil permeability to solve infiltration issues.  Topdressing turf areas after aeration always requires repeat applications to install the required amount for the best results, compared to infields or garden areas when the proper amount can be applied and incorporated at one time. Return to Top  |  Home ___________________________________________________________________________________________ High Traffic Turf Areas High traffic areas always reflect the quality of soil and amount of traffic they are subjected to. Frequent foot traffic and golf carts can create compaction and turf blade damage.  Vigorous athletic activity in soggy conditions can literally “blow out” playing surfaces – turf, roots and all. These same events on properly managed soils have much less damage potential. To correct existing soils and get the most wear resistance, the soil has to contain the right balance of non-compacted soil, proper drainage, and good air and water circulation for root production. AXIS is proven to reduce compaction the most of any amendment because it has the lowest bulk density and compacted soils are heaviest. AXIS also improves infiltration and drainage the best because it has the highest water absorption and release. AXIS is the right choice to improve rootmass for wear resistance because it transfers the most moisture and air into and through a rootzone.   This “breath-ability” generated 4 times more rootmass than USGA sand in a research study at Ohio State. In summary, AXIS provides the quickest way to reduce compaction, improve drainage and improve root growth so turf can withstand the pressures and pounding it is frequently subjected to. Return to Top  |  Home ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Indoor Gardening Plants need the same inputs of light, water, air and nutrients indoors or out.  When you want to push growth boundaries you have to start with great soil. We have three different sizes of AXIS: fine, regular and coarse to suit your personal preference.  Each aggregate size delivers additional porosity that is critical to increased soil function, improved availability to uptake water and nutrients, to give you excellent plant response. We recommend using AXIS at 15% by volume for container plants and mixing it thoroughly with your other desired soil components and then placing the blended soil into containers.  AXIS is compatible with any and all soil ingredients. EnviroTech also offers powdered diatomaceous earth as a mechanical insecticide which is effective for nuisance insects like fungus gnats and thrip.  For this application we recommend applying 3% by volume. Return to Top  |  Home ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Hydroponic Media AXIS Coarse has tremendous advantages as a hydroponic growing media over imported choices and works best when used with a mesh liner. It's important to realize that plants in hydroponic systems still need air. AXIS contains air reserves even when saturated that plants can utilize.  When AXIS hydrates, it displaces air within the pores into the surrounding environment.  As the water gradually releases, air is drawn back into the pores.  This respirative process circulates exponentially more air, water, and water-borne nutrients into and around plants with every cycle. Hydroponic systems also rely heavily on liquid nutrients.  Much more water-borne nutrients are absorbed and delivered into and out of the porous AXIS structure than from media with super-microscopic pores with much less absorptive capacity, or from hollow clay media. Unfortunately, air trapped in fired clay balls represents inactive space that doesn't transfer air, water or nutrients to plants.  This is a large amount of dedicated, non-functioning space in a system designed to maximize space, energy, inputs and growth. High efficiency is more than a principle in hydroponics, it's the whole premise and intent.  Diatomaceous earth is well known for insecticidal properties and works very well in hydroponic environments too.  It really does the trick against fungus gnats and thrip.  Maximize your hydroponic system growth potential and use American made AXIS. Return to Top  |  Home ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Roof Top Media Light weight soils are a prerequisite for on-structure gardens and planters.  Beyond that, when you only have only one installation opportunity and built-in construction challenges, it makes soil component selection and what each one actually accomplishes really important. This is one reason why we have extensive laboratory performance data on almost every possible product that could go “upstairs”.  AXIS is 25 lbs. per cubic foot and only 52 lbs. when hydrated, creates excellent drainage and yet retains water at the right tension to be highly plant available while reducing irrigation needs and water runoff.  Does any other product provide that? Return to Top  |  Home ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Seed Coating Looking for a great start to your planting efforts?  Seed contact with the ground and adequate moisture are vital.  Our diatomaceous earth (DE) powders are very effective at grabbing moisture to soften seed casings and providing initial moisture and a little extra bulk to provide contact.  DE has an incredible amount of surface area that sticks well to rough or smooth seeds and is often combined with other beneficial ingredients for a great start. Return to Top  |  Home ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Mechanical Insecticide Insects view diatomaceous earth like walking through a field of broken bottles.  It's a lot of sharp edges and pretty deadly to them.  It works mechanically to scratch, cut and wound insect bodies to dehydrate and desiccate the insects, causing death. Use our powdered diatomaceous earth blended with potting soil at 3% by volume for fungus gnats and thrip. Sprinkle it directly on the ground to ward off invading slugs, or dust your plants for aphids and other insects.  There are many anectodal stories of diatomaceous earth that reduce fly larvae in livestock manure which we hope to quantify soon.  Return to Top  |  Home ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Water Conservation What do Rutgers, Ohio State, University of Florida, UC Davis, and University of Augsburg in Germany have in common?  They all judge AXIS as having the most water saving potential when compared against "similar" amendments.  Time after time, year after year, the results are the same and so is the victor, and it's not just DE, it's AXIS. Return to Top  |  Home ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Bioswales & Retention Areas (Stormwater Management & Filtration) Diatomaceous earth (DE) is used for filtering swimming pools, corn syrup, vegetable oil, beer and wine.  There is no clearer swimming pool than one filtered by DE. Filtering works on the same principle we use to drain pasta. The holes have to be smaller than what you want to catch.  AXIS has a median pore size of 0.35 microns and filters any suspended solids larger than that.  Water can pass completely through AXIS granules due to it's high porosity and surface area.  Two literature reviews; one from the EPA and another from Alabama, identified median particle size of targeted contaminants as being between 3 and 18 microns.  Because AXIS is so porous, it helps prevent soil clogging of biofiltration areas so they can work longer. Many of these systems rely on high sand content.  Microbiologist Dr. Charles Bruno discovered that AXIS increases beneficial microbial populations in sand by 10 fold due to increased air and moisture capacity.  When used in planted bioswales AXIS's increase  on rootmass helps specially selected plants take up more minerals and water.   The ability to increased water holding capacity within plant and soil systems reduces runoff. For systems intended to capture and bio-digest runoff - AXIS uses trusted food-grade filtration methods, reduces runoff, helps keep the system open and working, and helps biological processes perform their critical work.  No other soil component can add so much performance at 15% - 25% by volume.
